That's not a huge difference to be looking for. In the case of a magneto, when the points close the resistance a two-lead ohmmeter would see might drop from ~ 1 Ohm (coil + leads) to 0.7 Ohms (coil). The aircraft magneto timing light model E50 is the industrial standard. Yes, the timing light will work fine on a magneto. Although an ohmmeter will work for this, it's far from the best way to approach the problem of a device for timing a magneto. I know they're commercially available, but my gut feel is that you could build one with a few resistors, a transistor or two and a red and green LED. I think it just needs to be a simple comparator with an internal battery which can tell the difference between a short (points closed) and the armature resistance (0.7 or so Ohms) points open. I'm looking for a diagram to build a simple timing light for a K2F or Magdyno. ![]()
